A level crossing accident took place at Boundary Road level crossing, Papakura, Auckland, around 9 am today, 30 June 2021. A Toyota RAV-4 car was clipped by a train on the crossing and a barrier arm was damaged. The driver of the car escaped with only minor injuries.
The Boundary Road level crossing is in the middle of a curious u-shaped deviation of the road, and if it were not for the fact it is fitted with warning devices (bells, lights and barriers), very obvious visibility problems for drivers approaching the crossing especially from the east side would easily allow it to be labelled as a dangerous crossing. In this case, especially given the type of vehicle involved, and the provision of significant warning devices which we assume were operating correctly, there seems to be no real excuse for this situation occurring.
